This means two things. One: you should feel luckier than hell. Two: November 14th I guess is pretty pathetic for the last update of such a prestigious site. Then again, it's now 2006 so I have to live up to nothing. NOTHING!

Holidays were tonnes of fun. Can't say that I went to sleep before 5am on a single day of those two weeks, so I'm having a bit of trouble coping with four 8:30's a week now. But it was well worth it. The house of Airesse, Brian, and Adrien hosted 3 excellent dancin ragers (BECOME A FUNKIN DJ ALREADY AIRESSE, you'll fill the place), the first of which Ry and I walked into at 1am shortly after walking off the Greyhound. I'll get some more pics up in time but for now there are a few below.

Christmas was nice. I got snorkel gear that I am really stoked on using.

New Years was spent at a nice chill potluck with tonnes and tonnes of amazing food. It's gonna be heartbreaking going back to two-colour meals :(
Got a little snowboarding in with Randy and my retro-boogie board boots and mashed up my knee a bit. Good fun. Also did a little partying in Kelowna and Salmon Arm. Oh Salmon Arm. definitely had some summer flashbacks. We were lucky enough to be at a house party with a dj whose self entitled 'hip-hop' mix consisted of 80's synth/hair pop. But that's ok... they had a cheeseball. Right Airesse? YUM. Annnnd Probably the best poker bet of all time was laid down that night. "I see your sock... I raise you my left cheeseball and a two-fingered hand job."

Tomorrow I'm headed off to Mount Washington to board, mash my knee up some more, and (are you ready for this?)

LEARN HOW TO LUGE

and probably mash my head a little

Well with that said, updates to follow. Stay tuned

Reading Break '05 avec Airesse

On reading break Airesse came down to Vic for the vedy first time! exciting! We adventured in Tofino for a couple of days Thurs, Fri, Sat, becoming "refugees" at the Kayak club party after some good ol fashioned Brush Cutter moves. Shortly after System of a Down that cleared the house of all but us angsty small-town kids,

"THIS PARTY NEEDS MORE SYSTEM!!" ~ Stephen.

we lay on the floor proclaiming to the world with much joy, that War is good for ABSOLUTELY NUTHIN (NUTHIN). And then we'd SAY IT AGAIN... UYH. (Did you know that 'War & Peace was originally entitled 'War: What is it Good For'?). The 10th time through yielded unsexy results. Big shut-ups from every non-refugee direction.

Some people don't like refugees and tried not once, but twice to decapitate us. So we took our heads and went to the most amazing beach (South beach at Wickininish) where waves focus huge, crash in, and washed up like milk... amazing, look at the pic below.

This night we became refugees in the games room of the Tofino Hostil. Colt 45 is not a morning-after-friendly beverage so with massive hangovers, we drank more booze (pretty booze, hotchococolate booze mmmm) passed out in the main room of the hostil practically on top of the fire-place after decorating the place with our wet socks. They wouldn't cut the foozeball short so we had to wait until 11pm before they would set out beds for us. So for hours people would walk into the main room and see passed out freaks and just kinda ... back... out... slowly. Meanwhile Airesse who for some super-human reason was unaffected by the super-villan Colt hangover (have you been tappin the Colt without me?... 'badass'), resorted to playing solitaire with 10 empties and a few quizical people around her. hehe. To make it even better, the next morning at 7am, apparently the games room Must Go On, so in walks crazy Swiss man who thinks that Stephen and Dan are female names, no knocking, and yells 'time to get up gotta get out!' while simultaeiously cranking Radiohead at epic 7am fooze-tournament volume and wedges the door open. How awkward. Speaking of, trying discreetly to change with 2 walls and a door's worth of windows aint all that easy... but luckily little boys who want to play epic Radiohead foozeball are terrified of boobs.

Next day we visited Stephen and friends' (very, very, nice non-gameroom with a huttub on a boardwalk on the ocean) cabin, checked out the surf competition and then headed home. Kudos to driver Mariken, braving rain, snow, hail, snow, rain, snow, rain with not so much as a flinch.

Anyhow, we met Bryn back in Vic for some classic Evo debauchery (check out Byrns in rehabilitation below). Bob introduced us to Raspberry beer at Swans (8% or something). Apparently it's some sort of evil tool for making me handicapped at "Spoofs," but I can't stay mad at it... it's too good. Then on Sunday Airesse and I checked out the Eric Burden & the Animals (Arse's favorite band EVAR) show at Legends. Was a pretty damn good show save for the lack of non-extra-large t-shirts and the small fact that drunken old people really can be enlarged assholes. 10 beers (1 beer for the moms) and all the "rules" go out the window for them. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's just plain gross ala middle-aged child-like man shoving 23 year-old girl over saying "MOVE I CAN'T SEE." Awesome. Anyhow that's my rant. Here are some pictures!

Science

There’s a certain depressing undertone that accompanies the field of science.
It is interesting, and there is no doubt that its importance is far reaching,
but…
It has a way of reducing anything and everything down to theory and fact; materializing all and making dizzying complexity of even the simplest of concepts. Mankind seems to have an insatiable appetite for knowledge, explanation, organization, and classification… this fed by the exponentially expanding knowledge base of the scrupulous field and propelled by our assiduous desire for more.
The unending search for explanation of the unexplainable, leads us to condemnation of the imagination. An explosion created the universe, life descended from a cell, and a flower is a bundle of organic material; its beauty the work of receptors in the brain. The sun and stars are burning balls of gases and a dream is no longer a dream, but a complex web of neurological chemical reactions.
Science binds the mind into a box in which our own finite existence is indifferently defined. It is unfortunate that progress does not come without such psychological expenses.

and on that happy note, happy reading break everybody!

Touuuche

YARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

October 14 --> Bamfield re-visited

Well the original mission was to troop on down to Bamfield and win the much coveted 1st place in the Bamfield Mushroom Festival Potluck Cook-off with Mariken's mushroom-chevre-blackberry-apple-perogie vision. However the trip itself had it's own, and in fact quite different ambitions. Massive hangovers fit only for pirates and a charming, yet fickle v-dub joined forces to see us leaving at 1pm, breaking down 15 min out of the Bams, and arriving at a fashionable lateness of 3.5 hours. But no matter... we feasted on leftovers, busted a move to the infamous Colin's King Baleetes, physically removed Mariken from some biology dood ds conversation, met the fall program (far too serious, too well dressed, and not enough gin/bailey's consumption), gaver off the govy (of course), slept in the community hall parking lot, and discovered dead skate treasure (see picture) at Pachena. And I must say that Coombs country market actually makes me want to live in Coombs... or at least camp out in the parking lot. All and all I'd say it was well worth a weekend of preparing for the big midterm week to fuck me over. Anyhow, here are some pictures. enjoy!

We are Thankful for damn good food!

We had a good 25 people or so over for Thanksgiving, and what a wikkid dinner it was. Mariken cooked up this organic bird from the Red Barn and it came out just amazing. Props to chef Mariken! Others brought dishes and wine and we all crammed into the dining room for the crazy feast. And for all of you viewers out there on the edge of your seats tuned into Sanman's life, although he had to be at Slaveway/Gheyway, I'm happy to report (and I'm sure he is too) that he was able to make it out for 1am leftovers amidst our drunken company. Hope everyone's Thanksgiving was great!

<img src="http://tinypic.com/eu1wme_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Image hosted by Bryn took me last night, and it went fairly well. Drove my shiny Poorola up through Sahali and through TRU campus and only stalled a couple times. Also drove to work this morning. Only stalled while trying to pull into a space at work (of coarse). And then came the drive home. It didn't help that I was with my dad (and don't get me wrong, big thanks to him for even riding in a standard with me) but he seems to be having a brain lapse over the thought that I actually know how to generally... well DRIVE.

"to get out of this parking space, you want to back up and turn while backing up"
"Make sure you line up your rearview mirror"
"ok now to pass this guy on the bike you want to slow down and look for oncoming traffic and then go around him"
"You want to slow down before you turn"
"slow down and stop at this stop light coming up"
"When nobody is going past anymore, you can turn onto the road"
"60 should be fine here on Westsyde Rd"

So I decide I need some gas, we pull in to petro.. westsyder store... race trak gas, whatever the heck it is now, and I begin to pull up to the pump. Now because my tank is on the wierd side I pull in one way, and some dink in a honkin truck pulls in at the same time, but head on to me and forces me out.
jerk.

commence the best part of my day:

I pull around and coast thru the other side and come to a stop. Clutch in, brake in. good Jenn, you're a standard MACHINE. Alright there are 10 people around now, so just pull away, let small man syndrome gas up and wait for the pump. Clutch out, push gas...

VRRR CHUNKCHUNKCHUNK PUTT. LURCHLURCHLURCH. dead.
hmm, well it's not supposed to do that.
Try again
VRRR CHUNKCHUNKCHUNK PUTT. LURCHLURCHLURCH. dead.
VRRR CHUNKCHUNKCHUNK PUTT. LURCHLURCHLURCHLURCH LURCH. dead.

So there are people staring and also people looking afraid as they walk in front of (and quickly run away from) my spontaneously chunking/lurching car. Fourth try's a charm and with one mighty and determined heave, the Red Rocket putts happily away. Here I am laughing like a hyena while my dad is quasi-freaking/stressing out. "NO don't do that do THIS, NO, you're not doing it right, you're being silly now NO NOOO"

Oh but it gets better. Doesn't it always.

Lowered head I get out to pump the gas. Before I can get around to the other side, Dr. Dad has gotten out and is directing the plays.

"unscrew the gas cap"
"ok good now put it on the car so you don't forget it"
"how much do you want. $25? Ok this is where it shows the amount of money, and this is the price of gas"
"it stopped because the tank is full"

Here I am with the same 10 people that watched my ghetto hydraulics show, and my dad is 'showing' me how to pump gas.

Just for the record. I know how to pump gas.

So I pay, hop back in the car and this time, with much hesitation, it starts fine (which is good cuz there was a dude that went to westsyde gassing up beside me) and as I'm rolling on out, I look to my left where there happens to be some 30 year old guy giving me a standing ovation. Awesome. Best thing is I was wearing my forest service shirt. I gave her a $20 bill and asked for ten of each, loonies & quarters please. While I'm makin some small talk, the girl just kinda chucks the 20 under the desk, opens the register and then stands there. Now this is interesting... maybe they keep lerger bills under the desk... securtiy purposes or something. But she is still standing there now, and has a confused look on her face before looking up and saying "I didn't take your 20 did I?"
"yeah.... you did"
"oh" Looking a little more confused, she starts looking around everywhere on the desk in binders and such. So I told her that she put it somewhere under the desk... realizing this is a very wierd thing to have to say, but an even wierder thing for her to do.
*blankly stares at me*
Ok, trying again, "I think maybe you put it down... ok maybe you dropped it?"
And she looks down.. "OH, ok I threw it in the GARBAGE!... heehee recycling your 20"
So she proceeds to get $10 bills out and then stops and looks confused again.
"10 loonies, $10 quarters"
"oh ok"
She proceeds to break OPEN a $10 roll of quarters, dump them all into the register and count them out. Alright maybe she thinks I want 10 quarters. Nnnope... watchin her count out ten nice little groups of 4, hand them to me as she goes, and only upon reaching an empty register at $10 does she realize that "oh hey, these rolls are TEN DOLLARS! Aren't I stupid"
So I walked on home with a package under my arm and a heavy jingly pocket of 50 loose coins.
Musta been one of those days.

In other news, does it seem unreasonable to have a final exam in a 1st year class (not only 100 level but 101*A*) which has 30 short answer, three 1 page essays, and one 5-page essay "encompassing the semester" in a 3 hour block? Seems like a hell of a job to me. I don't understand how the little people are coping with that... maybe i'm just getting lazy, who knows.

So this exam I thought was going to be a breeze may and up being some sorta typhoon on my GPA (yeah that sounded way to nerdy), because she wrote such a horrible midterm that was far too long for 45 min... and then just omitted it when 85% of the class failed. I think the avg was 40%. SO the midterm does not count, making this damn 5-page essay on something like "whales and people" worth 25% of my grade. Why am I still in school? Get outta here you old fart.

I've also found out that the fire centre wants to run me through a "screening program" on some new software at PFCO Headquarters here in Vic to make sure I am able to "multi-task."

Sounds kinda sci-fi.

I dunnwanna be a robot!

kbye

Adventures of Phil McKracken & Maybe if I actually watched the news... and had a TV... in October, I would have known this. Regardless, Science World is now
brace yourself

TELUSphere!

Oh RAGE. The anger of a thousand nerds and normal people alike!
I nearly choked on my KD and barfed fluorescent orange disgust on Vancouver.
Here I thought Sport Mart Place was wrong, but at least they sell SPORTING EQUIPMENT. Ironically just an hour previous to this discovery I was pondering the tardish yet true fact that the new stadium in Victoria is called 'Save On Foods Centre' Excellent. People won't even realize we HAVE a stadium. Mine and Mike's reinactment of what will now occur on a daily basis among unsuspecting souls in Victoria:

"Oh my, what a large grocery store! Lets go in!"
"whoa there are sweaty men with hockey sticks in here!"
"are we in the freezer section?"
"my these groceries are expensive... and you can only get hot dogs and chips"
... and pucks for some strange reason"
"yeah, you even have to pay to get IN"
"oh peachy, big foam shopping fingers!"
"they must serve food though - they are the Salmon Kings!"

Advertising makes me violently ill.
Commercials with entire content completely unrelated to the product trigger a gag reflex of confusion. Last I checked, sex was being used to sell mustard.

Oh Shit.
I'm eating my hotdog...
bikini models aren't breaking down my door to mosh to Justin Timberlake in my kitchen...
My MUSTARD must be broken.

But most of all, community building "sponsorhip." Yes you are so angelic for helping out that non-profit organization. Too bad you are going to HELL for those HIDEOUS BILLBOARDS plastered all over the building featuring your newest mobile phone and a dorky starwars-esque name that you've crippled the poor place with. A name that singularly puts the word DORK to shame - something you'd naturally consider impossible considering it's a GIANT DOME that CONTAINS DORKS.

TELUSPHERE
So aptly put: "It makes Sport Mart Place seem absolutely brilliant"
I shudder to think of what kind of a crooked grip subliminal advertising has on my mind.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm tired.
I'm also craving Pepsi, an All-new-hot-bonus-cool-super-saver Long-distance Plan, and a little green tree frog.

If you are not fully convinced (and even if you are), you must read this (big brother says).

i hope the canucks win the superbowl.

Pylons are happy orange symbols of... REVOLT

Last weekend proved interesting. It started as a trip to Vancouver, thurs – sun, to visit my good friend Bryn. Bryn, just finishing his classes, for the semester was moving out of his suite in Vancouver and into his parents’ house (sucker) in Kamloops for his teaching practicum at Sahali Secondary. Was great to see him and his roommate Matt, Cath who has left Vic for a co-op in Van :( , Dan, and Katy who are livin it up in the Gage towers at UBC this semester.

It got interesting right about the point that Katy and I were bound for jail.

After the Cactus Club, some huge pub that I don’t remember the name of, and a drunken discrepancy I care not to speak of, Bryn, Matt, Tony, and Katy and I were headed to God only knows where in Gas Town. At this point I happened to pick up a cone/megaphone (ohh the pretty orange… you know it’s irresistible). Whilst traversing the intersection our good Brit friend Katy is telling me to “put it on that guy’s hood! Put it on the hoodputitonthehood! It’ll be funny as hell!” Meanwhile I’m yelling “nooo noooo… meh” and leave the thing in the middle of the crosswalk (though not in the middle of a lane) for no good reason other than that fact I was bored of it and it wanted down.

Sooo we are walking away… bathed in a soothing red and blue glow, hearing cops shouting and I am thinking in my state of brilliance “wow, somebody is in TROUBLE… Glad it’s not me!”

Yeah, it was me.
The dude was screaming “get over here, come back here this INSTANT.” And in my wavey sight, a very short, very stocky and VERY angry, Asian cop who could probably squash me with his pinky knuckle.

So the “put-it-on-the-hood” car was an undercover police car.

of course.

Go figure huh. So he takes my license and registration and tells me I am going to jail and to wait there, while he checks it and in my confusion I ask him what I have done wrong. And he says “WHAT HAVE YOU NOT DONE WRONG?!” Apparently as his elaborate tale goes, I am a menace to society, as I most obviously KNEW it was a police car (good undercover job buddy) and placed the cone there as a deliberate symbol of my disregard to the Vancouver police force… with blatant intent to turn onlookers against the Vancouver police system as well. I then proceeded to "run away" after he called me over. According to him “people think they are a joke as it is.” Perhaps this guy is new on the scene… a little depressed by a lack of recognition, who the hell knows. All I know is that with this kind of action… arresting some drunk chick for playing with a cone… might MIGHT just warrant this general lack of respect. "I have apprehended some DANGEROUS CRIMIANLS!"... meanwhile 2 blocks down a man is being mugged and stabbed. Right buddy. Good job. Look out for my dangerous coneular weapon.

My memory flashes back to Kamloops cops… looking at you, shaking his head… and saying “just go home man.” Or Sarah’s story of Cam mistakenly drunkenly mooning a cop car. Oh yes, the “go home” line has been heard many a time. Well not this time folks. Quick ideas needed. As he is retreating to his car Katy and I are insisting “no wait, wait just come back and talk to us.” He turns back to us and says with obvious contempt and a hint of small man syndrome “What could you POSSIBLY have to say to me to make me come back there and WANT to talk to you?”

* quick desperate look at each other *

...

* unleash the tears. Many many tears *
time to make a scene. I hope I don’t know many people in Gastown.

Oh some may look down their noses at the crying card… but the crying card is the fekkin royal flush of legal maneuvers such as these. I believe it went something like this: “my… my… boyfriend just… DUMPED ME! THIS IS THE WORST NIGHT OF MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE!! AHHH!”
So apparently there is something we could possibly say to him to make him want to speak to us. While he is at his car, Katy is telling me “Pin everything on me, they cannot TOUCH me, I am foreign!” Meanwhile I’m trying not to laugh, supposed to be crying, Good Lord. He returns with plenty of lecturing about how we should be headed to jail. Katy tells him my darned boyfriend has given me a hell of a time, I'm lost and distraught, and she told me to do the cone thing, "just hijinks on the night of a bad situation” She told him we "ran away (even though we didn't) because she was always told not to go to a strange man who is yelling at her to come over if he is not wearing a uniform (he actually agreed to this). She also finished off the brilliant piece of asstalk art with “my experience with the police in Canada has been a good one. The other night I was in a line at the bar and it got quite a bit rowdy and the police stepped in and got things under control and really made me feel safe.” The guy was obviously pleased judging by the extra degree of puffedness his chest became. Take a bow Katy, you’re awesome.

He finished off his end of things with a comment about how our “friend with the stupid hair” (i.e. Tony), was an idiot and a poor excuse for a man. (He had asked the cop for his ID when I was asked for mine. Although it may have sounded cocky, he IS bound by law to show a badge especially if not wearing a uniform. He never did.) He launched into telling me that men don’t mature until they are at least 30 and that there is “probably nothing I can say to make this young lady feel better about men tonight” ahhaha. Grand.

“No sir, we just met those guys tonight, no sir it’s ok we can call our own cab.. no we are not going with those boys. Especially the one with the stupid hair.”

And such was the grand retarded night. Flashback to dancing on heavy machinery in the construction site with Bryn and Cath last year. To put it in Kat’s words: “The nights I’m being carried away in the back of a cop car, are the nights I consider my finest work.” Cheers Kat. Though I’d argue that avoiding the car may be finer :P All the same, you have egged a cop in the face. You win.

I don’t remember much of the cab other than the cabby didn’t speak any English and hardly did we. Tony got off at some location that was not his house, and we made it to Bryns at some point.
Two hours of sleep later, Bryn’s parents arrived at 8am and somehow moved his entire life possessions, including himself out of the door in 15 minutes flat. On a side note, talking to Bryn’s parents drunk at wee hours is not easy.

Katy proceeded to get on a bus that took her to Richmond instead of UBC while thinking about dinosaurs.

The End.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jenninerd.blogspot.com/2005/02/pylons-are-happy-orange-symbols-of.html' title='Pylons are happy orange symbols of...
